Garbage Disposals: General Information
Garbage disposals help reduce waste in landfills. They also help you keep odors, pests, and bacteria out of your kitchen. Contrary to some beliefs, they can be used in homes that use public sewer systems and private septic tanks. When deciding which garbage disposal is best for your home or commercial kitchen, there are three priorities you should have on your list of requirements:
- Functionality
- Longevity
- Noise
Regarding functionality, you need to make sure you are installing a garbage disposal that has a strong enough motor to chew up all of the food waste you are putting through it. The longevity of your garbage disposal refers to how long the unit will last or is covered under warranty. Noise is self explanatory – how loud is the unit when it’s in use?
InSinkErator Information
InSinkErator is the world’s largest manufacturer of garbage disposals. They have been around since 1938. Their headquarters are in Racine, Wisconsin. They are the only garbage disposal manufacturer that has invented, designed, and assembled their disposals in the USA.
InSinkErator stands by their products with their ‘We Come To You® In-Home Limited Warranty’ for all fixtures made by InSinkErator. That means that they will come to your location whenever your InSinkErator garbage disposal or hot water dispenser needs to be serviced within the fixture’s warranty period.
Choosing which garbage disposal is right for your kitchen depends on how much you want to spend. All garbage disposal models by InSinkErator are good quality fixtures that are backed by their warranty which lasts anywhere from 3 to 12 years. Simply put, the more you spend, the better model you get when it comes to InSinkErator.

FAQs:
What cannot go down a garbage disposal?
According to Eric Schultz, director of product management at InSinkErator, fibrous vegetables and peels, celery, corn husks, artichokes, edamame pods, asparagus, and rhubarb are all problematic foods. He says that “Premium garbage disposals with multi-grind technology can handle fibrous foods in small amounts. But stringy materials tend to go through most garbage disposals and ball up in your plumbing, causing clogs.” Other foods that are not recommended to go down garbage disposals are grease, fats, and oils, high quantities of starchy foods or produce peels, eggshells, shellfish, and coffee grounds.
What is the difference between batch feed and continuous feed garbage disposals?
Batch feed and continuous feed disposals process waste differently. Batch feed units do not use a wall switch. They process waste when a grinding plate is placed into the drain. A batch feed disposal will not turn on unless this plate is in place. Continuous feed disposals activate with a switch, and process a continuous flow of waste. Batch feed units tend to be less noisy. Continuous feed disposals tend to be more powerful. Batch feed disposals are safer for households with young children.
