Commercial Restroom Signage Purchasing Tips
• Signs that contain a vertical line in between the ‘woman | man’ images designates that the sign should be used as directions to the women’s and men’s rooms. A sign without a line in between the ‘woman man’ images designates that the sign is to be used in front of a single stall restroom that can be used by both genders.
• Signs that have ‘T-24’ in the product title are compliant with California’s restroom sign requirements when installed according to their requirements.
• Be sure to mention to the sales rep you work with that you need all of your signs to match if purchasing multiple signs in different styles. This is most important for the blue signs, which are sourced from different companies. You will want to purchase all of your signs from the same provider to ensure they are all the exact same shade of blue.
Sign Installation Information
• Before attaching the sign with the adhesive strips, make sure wall or door surface is clean and dry.
• Signs should be hung on latch side of door.
• Signs should be hung 60″ from floor to center of sign and 8-12″ from door frame to center of sign.
• People reading the sign should be able to stand within 3-inches of the sign without hitting anything or being in the swing path of the door.

ADA Restroom Signs Information
Public facilities are required to abide by specific ADA requirements set forth by the federal government for persons with physical and sensory limitations. Below are the general sign requirements cited in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design PDF. The information below is taken directly from section 213 ‘Toilet Facilities and Bathing Facilities’ standards section of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design PDF.
It is worth mentioning that certain places have different requirements and specifications. This includes airports, places of lodging, social service center establishments, medical facilities, detention and correctional facilities, along with a variety of other ‘specialty’ facilities.
If you have more questions about sign requirements or other ADA requirements, you can contact the Americans with Disabilities Act via phone, through their website, or via mail on the ADA Contact Page.
“216.2 Designations. Interior and exterior signs identifying permanent rooms and spaces shall comply with 703.1, 703.2, and 703.5. Where pictograms are provided as designations of permanent interior rooms and spaces, the pictograms shall comply with 703.6 and shall have text descriptors complying with 703.2 and 703.5.
Tactile text descriptors are required for pictograms that are provided to label or identify a permanent room or space. Pictograms that provide information about a room or space, such as “no smoking,” occupant logos, and the International Symbol of Accessibility, are not required to have text descriptors.
216.8 Toilet Rooms and Bathing Rooms. Where existing toilet rooms or bathing rooms do not comply with 603, directional signs indicating the location of the nearest toilet room or bathing room complying with 603 within the facility shall be provided. Signs shall comply with 703.5 and shall include the International Symbol of Accessibility complying with 703.7.2.1. Where existing toilet rooms or bathing rooms do not comply with 603, the toilet rooms or bathing rooms complying with 603 shall be identified by the International Symbol of Accessibility complying with 703.7.2.1. Where clustered single user toilet rooms or bathing facilities are permitted to use exceptions to 213.2, toilet rooms or bathing facilities complying with 603 shall be identified by the International Symbol of Accessibility complying with 703.7.2.1 unless all toilet rooms and bathing facilities comply with 603.”
California Restroom Sign Regulations
California’s regulations abide by federal standards as well as its own California state statutes. California’s Equal Restroom Access Act (California AB 1732) and Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations describe the sign requirements for facility restrooms found in the Golden State. We recommend reviewing the materials found on the California Building Commission website and also the California Legislative Information website.
In this article, signs that comply with California’s restroom sign requirements include ‘T-24’ in the item title listed below each sign group’s image.
Some broad differences between California requirements versus federal ADA requirements:
- ADA requires only one sign per restroom. California requires two per restroom.
- California requires all doors leading to public restrooms to be clearly identified with a symbol. The symbols and shapes (for example, a triangular sign signifies a men’s room) must have specific thicknesses and colors.
- Single occupancy restrooms are required to be accessible to everyone regardless of gender. Specific sign shape, thickness, braille translation, and text apply.
- Mounting requirement differences (height and location).

Restroom Stall Block-Aide
#16764
This restroom stall block-aide is used to slide over a stationary stall front panel and the door panel. This locks the door and prevents patrons from entering the stall. The message on the block-aide is polite and lets the patron know that the stall is currently out of service. This tool slides easily between the two panels. It is made of ABS resin which protects it from chipping or cracking if dropped. It fits most doors. Learn more about the block-aide in our Block-Aide Blog Article.
