Tips for Maintaining a Backflow Prevention Assembly

  • Make sure to have your backflow preventers tested every year as regulations require.

  • A failed test may require that your check valves need replaced. This can be true even if your relief valves aren’t discharging.

  • If a relief valve is discharging, that doesn’t necessarily mean your unit needs repaired. It could just be doing its job. If the relief valve is just spitting water on/off, on/off, that generally means the valve is working properly and all of your seals are fine

  • If your relief valve is constantly dumping water, then most likely your check valve has failed, and a repair is necessary. But it could also mean there is debris in the valve. To be sure, take the valve apart and clean both checks. Then see if the valve continues to dump water after reassembly

  • If there is a small drip coming from your relief valve, it could mean either your check valve is bad, or there is a bad seal on the relief valve. In either case, fixing the unit with a Total Repair Kit is recommended

  • To identify what type of backflow preventer you have before you order a kit, check the metal ID tag on your unit. The serial number does not help us. The ID number may be laser-etched on the valve as well.
